STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma Collegiate Cattlemen’s and Cattlewomen’s Associations members won the Oklahoma State University homecoming sweepstakes for the second consecutive year on Oct. 19.
The homecoming sweepstakes contest, where student organizations can earn points by competing in spirit-themed events throughout homecoming week, is a big event for any student group. For the OCCA and OCCW the contest represents something even more important – a chance to advocate for the beef community.
“A big part of our group is supporting the cattle industry,” said Tom Purves, OCCA president. Throughout the week OCCA and OCCW participated in a variety of events with the theme “Turning agriculture orange one brand at a time,” Purves said.
“When it comes the cattle industry, I would say “Eat Beef” is our brand, and we definitely did that this past week with promoting beef and animal agriculture,” said Purves.
While OCCA and OCCW invest a lot of time into homecoming activities and the sweepstakes contest with events such as Harvest Carnival, Walkaround and the parade, Purves says those events are merely an extension of the work that the group does throughout the rest of the year.
“It’s not just something that we do for fun. There’s a purpose behind it. That purpose is promoting the beef industry here at Oklahoma State and abroad,” said Purves.
The Oklahoma Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association creates fellowship among young people interested in the cattle industry, facilitates networking opportunities within the beef community and develops career success through educational events and speakers, industry engagement and public outreach.
